Denver Drops OT Heartbreaker to Oral Roberts

The Pioneers will host Idaho State on Wednesday in its first game of the Big Sky/Summit Challenge

DENVER  – The University of Denver men's basketball program came from seven down at halftime but fell in overtime to Oral Roberts  89-86 on Sunday afternoon inside Hamilton Gymnasium.
 
The Pioneers (9-6, 1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Tommy Bruner, who had 32 points, five assists and two steals. Jaxon Brenchley added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Touko Tainamo helped out with a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 20 rebounds.
 
Denver did a great job disrupting Oral Roberts shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Isaiah Carr led the way individually for the Pioneers with two rejections. 

Notes:
Denver had two players finish with a double-double for the first time since Nov. 23, 2022 against IUPUI (Kisunas and Tainamo).  
 
Touko Tainamo finished with 15 points and 20 rebounds.

  • Tainamo's 20 rebounds tied a school record, matching Yemi Nicholson's 20 boards against Troy on January 28, 2006.
  • Nine of Tainamo's 20 rebounds were on the offensive glass.
  • Tainamo's double-double was his second-straight, his fifth of the season and the 11th of his career.
  • Tainamo finished in double figures for the fourth-straight game, the 12th time this season and the 41st time in his career.
  • Tainamo finished with double digit rebounds for the second-straight game, the fifth game this season and the 16th time in his career.
Jaxon Brenchley finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Brenchley's double-double was the first of his career.
  • Brenchley finished in double figures for the seventh time this season and the 11th time in his career.
  • Brenchley finished with 20+ points for the second time this season and of his career.
  • Brenchley finished with double-digit rebounds for the second time this season and of his five-year career.
Tommy Bruner finished with 32 points and five assists.
  • Bruner finished in double figures for the 17th-straight game and the 87th time in his career.
  • Bruner finished with 20+ points for the fourth-straight game, the 10th time this season and the 18th time in his career.   
  • Bruner finished with 30+ points for the fourth time this season and the fifth time in his career.
  • Bruner had 5+ assists for the sixth-time this season and the 34th game in his career.

How it Happened:
After falling behind 27-23, Denver went on a 7-0 run with 5:53 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tyson Garff, to take a 30-27 lead. The Pioneers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 39-32.
 
Oral Roberts kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 50-37 advantage before Denver went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Tainamo's layup, to shrink the deficit to 50-44 with 13:47 to go in the contest. The Pioneers rally continued as they outscored Oral Roberts 28-22 the rest of the way to tie it at 72-72 and send the game to overtime.
Oral Roberts then snagged a 79-74 advantage with 2:47 left in the first overtime before Denver responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Bruner's jumper, to even the score at 79 all with 2:01 to go in the period. The Pioneers could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Golden Eagles outscored them 10-7 the rest of the way to hand Denver the 89-86 loss.
 
UP NEXT:
The entire league will take a break from conference play next week and each play two games in the 2023-24 Big Sky/Summit League Challenge. Denver will host Idaho State on Wednesday in the second game of a women's and men's double header scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. MT.
