Andreas Kirkeng Places Second in Freestyle Sprints at UAA Invitational

Pioneers in third place after the first day of competition

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Sophomore Andreas Kirkeng of the University of Denver ski team placed second in men's freestyle sprints on Monday afternoon as the Alaska Anchorage Invitational got underway with Nordic races at Kincaid Park.
 
Kirkeng was beat at the finish line by Luke Jager of Utah, while Colorado's Magnus Boee placed third among the collegians. Tom Mancini of the Utes was also in the final and came in fourth.
 
Senior Bernhard Flaschberger was the only other Pioneer to make the semifinals, as he came in seventh overall and fifth in his semifinal heat.
 
Sophomore Elijah Weenig was Denver's third men's scorer in 12th, reaching it to the quarterfinals. Freshman Sivert Wulff came in 25th, sophomore Jonah Steinberg placed 26th and Jonah's brother, freshman Micah Steinberg, placed 33rd in his collegiate debut after missing the start of the season due to an injury.
 
Freshman Selma Andersen and junior Hanna Ray led DU's women's squad in 18th and 21st place, respectively—the only two DU skiers to make it out of qualifying and into the quarterfinals. Vera Norli also scored for the Pios in 28th, while Bettina Burgess was 30th, Sidney Barbier was 31st and Emma Larsson was 32nd.
 
Alaska Fairbanks' Mariel Pulles won the women's competition, with Utah's Novie McCabe in second and CU's Anna-Maria Dietze in third.
 
The Pioneers are in third place after the first day of the meet with 129 points, 58 behind leader Utah with 187 points. Second-place Colorado is 40 points ahead with 169 points.
 
Denver placed third in the men's Nordic race and sixth in the women's competition.
 
UP NEXT: The Nordic portion of the UAA Invitational is Tuesday at Kincaid Park with the men's and women's 10K classical, while alpine gets its competition going with giant slalom at Alyeska Resort.
