ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Denver women's basketball team got a career-high 19 points from freshman Angelina Robles to lead the Pioneers past St. Thomas 62-51 on Saturday afternoon at Schoenecker Arena.
The Pioneers (10-14, 6-7) had three players score in double figures, led by Robles, who had 19 points and two steals. Mikayla Brandon added 14 points and three steals and Makayla Minett helped out with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Denver did a great job disrupting St. Thomas shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. Mikenzie Jones led the way individually for the Pioneers with four rejections.
How It Happened
Denver started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Minett, to take an early lead with 6:29 left in the first quarter. The Pioneers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 15-4 advantage. Denver got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its 15 total points.
Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:11 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Emma Smith, to increase its lead to 22-6. The Tommies cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 31-19 advantage heading into halftime. Denver dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 16 points close to the basket.
After intermission, Denver held on to its advantage and owned a 43-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Denver played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 12 points in the paint.
Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Minett's layup, to grow the lead to 52-37 with 6:41 to go in the contest. The Tommies narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pioneers still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-51 win. Denver took advantage of five St. Thomas turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
