Cooper Cornelius Places Second in GS at RMISA Qualifier

Denver skiing begins five days of races

NEDERLAND, Colo.  – Sophomore Cooper Cornelius of the Denver Pioneers ski team reached the podium for the second time in his career on Wednesday in the men's giant slalom at the RMISA Alpine Qualifier at Eldora Mountain Resort.

Cornelius held onto his second position after the first run and finished in a total of 1:49.27, coming just two-tenths of a second behind winner Jacob Dilling of Colorado. CU's Filip Forejtek was also on the podium in third. No team scores were calculated in the race, which served as another opportunity for skiers to qualify for next month's national championships.

It was Cornelius' first podium since placing second in men's GS at the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 18, 2022. He has now finished in the top 10 in seven of eight career giant slalom events.

Fifth-year senior Simon Fournier made his season debut in the race and recorded a top 10 in eighth (1:50.42), while freshman Thomas Hoffman placed 15th.

Four other Pioneers were separated by four-tenths of a second on the leaderboard, with Adrian Minde Hunshammer in 20th (1:51.42), Trey Seymour in 21st (1:51.57), Jack Bowers in 23rd (1:51.79) and Cole Puckett in 24th (1:51.82).

The RMISA qualifier before the alpine portion of the Colorado Invitational on Thursday was an addition to this year's schedule after the cancellation of most of the Montana State Invite races last week in Bozeman. Wednesday was a men's only event as the women were able to get one GS run in at MSU, which count as an official college race and was later redesignated as an alpine qualifier.

UP NEXT: The CU Invite continues with two days of men's and women's giant slalom races on Thursday and Friday at Eldora. The Denver Invitational begins on Friday with Nordic events at Maloit Park in Minturn, Colorado, while alpine kicks off two days of slalom races at Loveland Ski Area on Saturday.
