PREVIEW: Pioneers Begin National Tournament vs. Cornell Big Red

DU hockey set for regional semifinals in New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Denver Pioneers hockey team takes on the Cornell Big Red on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. MT in the NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional Semifinals at SNHU Arena. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNews and is also available on ESPN+.

Denver is the top seed in the Manchester region and is No. 4 overall in the national bracket. Cornell is No. 4 seed and ranks No. 12 in the national polls.

This is the first meeting between DU and CU since the teams faced off in a non-conference series on Dec. 5-6, 2014 in Ithaca, New York. The Big Red won the first game of that weekend set before the Pioneers responded the next night to earn the two-game split.

The teams have played each other four times previously in the national tournament, with Denver defeating Cornell in the 1969 National Championship Game and the Big Red earning the victory three years later in the national semifinals. The teams split a two-game series in the 1986 national quarterfinals, which saw DU advance based on goal aggregate (7-6).

Denver (30-9-0, 19-5-0 NCHC) earned an at-large bid into the national tournament despite losing 1-0 in the NCHC Frozen Faceoffs Semifinals to Colorado College last Friday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Goaltender Magnus Chrona started and made 20 saves while Matt Davis finished the contest and stopped all five shots he faced. Denver enters the tournament with an 11-2 mark in the last 13 games and have a 14-4 record in the past 18 contests since Jan. 7.

Cornell (20-10-2, 15-6-1 ECAC) is coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Ivy-rival Harvard last Friday in the ECAC semifinals. Prior to the loss, the Big Red had won four games in a row, including sweeping Clarkson in two games in the conference quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Boston University and No. 3 seed and NCHC-foe Western Michigan are set to play in the other semifinal in Manchester before DU and CU, with that game set for 12 p.m. MT (ESPN 2). The winners of the two semifinals will play in the regional final on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT (ESPNU). The four teams in Manchester have combined for 16 national championships.
