DU Men’s Tennis Grabs 4-2 Win Over New Mexico

Denver closes non-conference slate 9-7 with Saturday’s win at home

DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team (9-7) topped New Mexico at home on Saturday, 4-2, to finish the team's non-conference schedule.

Doubles:
New Mexico held an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point in a hard-fought battle. After UNM took the victory in No. 1 doubles, Denver's No. 3 team of sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu and freshman Raffaello Papajcik leveled things with a 6-4 win, breaking in the opening game of the match and holding serve the rest of the way.

In No. 2 doubles, redshirt senior Anish Sriniketh and junior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta also broke to begin their match but gave up two late breaks to ultimately give the point to New Mexico.

Singles:
Sancho Arbizu gave Denver its first point with his No. 2 singles win. He broke in the first game of the match but gave it back for 3-all before breaking again late to win the first set, 6-4. He carried momentum into the second set, taking a 3-1 lead and adding a second break for 5-2 before closing it out.

DU's first lead of the day came with matching 6-3 wins for junior Peter Sallay in No. 3 singles. He over came a break in the opening game before winning five consecutive games. The second set started on serve before he broke for a 4-3 lead before breaking again in the final game.

UNM evened up the team tally at 2-2 with a win in No. 5 singles, but Denver would clinch the victory with straight-sets wins in Nos. 1 and 6 singles. Like Sallay, Herrero Cuesta was broken in the first game but immediately broke back to get the first set back on serve. After breaking midway through the set, he was unable to serve it out at 5-3 but broke in the next game to take it, 6-4. He held a 5-0 lead in the second set and finished with a 6-1 win.

Minutes later, junior Charlie Miller clinched the win for Denver in No. 6 singles. In the first set, he broke early and had a 5-2 lead that turned into a 6-3 win. The second set remained on serve through 5-4 when Miller broke in what would be the final game of the match.

Only No. 4 singles remained unfinished, though graduate student Conner Olsen won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-0, and held a 5-3 lead in the second.
