Magnus Chrona Signs with San Jose Sharks

The 2022-23 NCHC Goaltender of the Year guarded the pipes for four seasons at Denver

DENVER – University of Denver hockey goaltender Magnus Chrona has signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks, the NHL club announced on Monday.

Chrona started in all 32 games he played in as a senior in 2022-23 and posted a 22-9-0 record, 2.19 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and four shutouts. The NCHC Goaltender of the Year, Chrona ranked tied for ninth in the country in wins and tied for 10th in shutouts.

Also named to the NCHC's All-Conference First Team and the winner of the NCHC Three Stars Award for the second consecutive season, Chrona was one of nine semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, given to college hockey's top goaltender. He was a member of the Academic All-Conference Team and recognized as an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each of his four campaigns.

The Stockholm, Sweden, native started in all four season openers during his time at DU, the first Pioneer keeper to accomplish the feat since the turn of the century (1999-00). Chrona posted a season-long, seven-game winning streak this past season from Jan. 27-Feb. 15, and he registered a 133:39 shutout streak from Jan. 21-Feb. 4 and had a 132:36 streak from Jan. 7-20. He owned three shutout streaks of at least 120 minutes in his collegiate career, joining Wade Dubielewicz as the only goaltenders in program history to accomplish the feat.

In the Gold Pan series against Colorado College, Chrona recorded a 350:11 shutout streak versus Denver's in-state rival that featured five full-game shutouts, stretched across seven games and over the course of three seasons from Feb. 25, 2021 to Feb. 4, 2023.

Chrona backstopped the Pioneers to the 2022 NCAA Championship after compiling a 1.41 goals-against average, .935 save percentage and only allowing one power-play goal against in four national tournament games. In the championship game on April 9, 2022 versus Minnesota State, the goaltender made 27 saves and stopped all 20 shots he faced in the final two periods as DU rallied from a one-goal deficit in the third period.

In 2021-22, Chrona suited up in the ninth-most games in school history (37) and posted a 28-8-1 record, 2.11 goals-against average, .911 save percentage and six shutouts. In the school record book, he ranked second for victories in a single season, tied for third in shutouts and 10th in goals-against average. He recorded a career-long, nine-game winning streak from Jan. 15-Feb. 11, 2022 and posted a personal-best 11-game unbeaten streak from Dec. 31, 2021-Feb. 11, 2022 (10-0-1).

Chrona also recorded three-straight shutouts on Jan. 16 vs. Omaha (20 saves), Jan. 21 vs. Colorado College (19 saves) and Jan. 22 at Colorado College (16 saves) during his junior campaign to become just the third goalie in school history to accomplish the feat and the first to do it in three consecutive team games. He posted a shutout streak of 198:10 over the course of five games from Jan. 15-28, 2022, ranking as the third-longest in program history.

Making his 100th career start on Jan. 13 versus Miami, Chrona started 113 of his 114 games at DU, as the only contest that he came in relief for was Feb. 28, 2020 at St. Cloud State. Chrona finished his collegiate career ranked fourth in school history in career games played by a goaltender (114), fourth in wins (73), tied for second in shutouts (13), sixth in goals-against average (tied-2.20), ninth in saves (2604) and 10th in save percentage (.914).

Chrona was All-NCHC Honorable Mention in 2021-22 and was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team in 2019-20. He was recognized as a AHCA National All-America Scholar in 2020-21.

Selected in the fifth round at 152nd overall in the 2018 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Chrona was acquired by the Sharks in a trade on April 12, 2021 in exchange for defenseman Fredrik Claesson.
