DU Gymnastics’ Brown, Hutchinson Earn NCAA Podium Finishes

Denver graduate student, junior combine for four, top-eight placements at NCAA Nationals

FORT WORTH, Texas – University of Denver gymnasts Lynnzee Brown and Jessica Hutchinson each landed multiple podium finishes at the 2023 NCAA National Championships on Thursday.

Both Brown and Hutchinson earned spots in the all-around and on floor while Brown added a second-place finish on vault.

Individual standings are determined after results are combined from both NCAA national semifinal meets. The top eight gymnasts, including ties, are recognized on each of the four events plus the all-around.

In her sixth and final year of eligibility, Brown placed a DU-record fourth overall in the all-around with her 39.6625 – also a Denver record in NCAA Nationals competition. She improved upon her own previous record from 2019 when she finished sixth overall in the all-around.

After sticking her Yurchenko 1.5 on vault during the first rotation of the first semifinal, Brown nearly held on for the national title but narrowly finished tied for second with a 9.9250. It, too, became a new Denver record for top finish on vault, improving on Jessica Lopez's sixth-place finish in 2009 when NCAA Event Finals were still contested.

The 2019 NCAA National co-Champion on Floor, Brown found her way back to the podium on the event for the third time in her career, tying for fourth with a 9.9500. As an individual qualifier in 2021, she tied for seventh on the event. Brown, who used her 2023 floor routine as a tribute to Nina McGee's national title-winning routine from 2016, now passes her mentor for most career floor podium finishes.

Additionally, Brown became the first Denver gymnast to finish on the podium three times in a single NCAA National Championships. She improved on her 2021 record-setting appearance where she earned three top-10 finishes in what was then the best single NCAA Nationals performance by a DU gymnast. She finishes her career with DU records of five podium finishes at NCAA Nationals and nine total placements in the top 10.

In her first career appearance at the NCAA National Championships, Hutchinson joined Brown in the tie for fourth on floor. She, too, scored a 9.9500 on the event to also match the top floor score by a DU gymnast at NCAA Nationals set by Brown and McGee.

She also joined Brown on the all-around podium, tying for eighth overall with a 39.5625 that is the third-highest mark in DU's NCAA Nationals history. Together, Brown and Hutchinson are the only Denver gymnasts to finish on the NCAA Nationals podium in the all-around – Brown doing so in 2019 and 2023.

Hutchinson missed the beam podium by just .0125.

As a team, Denver finished fourth in semifinal with a 196.5000 after setting program NCAA Nationals records on floor (49.3625) and vault (49.2250).
