SIOUX FALLS, S.D.  – University of Denver Men's Basketball sophomore forward Touko Tainamo was named to the Summit League All-Academic Team on Wednesday in a release by the Summit League.
 
Tainamo becomes the first Pioneer to make the team since Jake Pemberton did back in 2018. The forward from Finland has a 3.95 cumulative GPA as a Mathematics and Philosophy major.
 
"I am so proud of Touko for earning Summit League All-Academic Team honors," head coach Jeff Wulbrun said. "It reflects his desire and pursuit of excellence in all his opportunities and endeavors. In Touko's case, he has carried a straight A average in the classroom, played at a very high level on the basketball court, all while learning a new language and culture in the United States.
 
"This is a great day in our program as our players take tremendous pride in their academic achievement and understand the value of a University of Denver degree."

To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of his team's competitions.
 
Nominations are brought forth by sports information directors from the league's ten institutions and voting is conducted by both the SIDs and facility athletic representatives (FARs). The team is made up of the five student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.

Tainamo is coming off his best season yet for the Crimson and Gold, posting career high averages in points (10.6) and rebounds (6.4), 3-point percentage (41.7) and free throw percentage (69.2). The sophomore also recorded three double-doubles on the year.
