No. 66 DU Men’s Tennis Sweeps Oral Roberts on Friday

Denver earns 7-0 in first Summit League road match of 2023

TULSA, Oklahoma – The No. 66-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team (11-7) posted a 7-0 sweep at Oral Roberts on Friday in the team's first Summit League road match of the season.

Doubles:
Denver opened the day with a 1-0 after capturing the doubles point, earning wins on the top two courts to take the early match lead. Freshman Raffaello Papajcik and sophomore Daniel Sancho Arbizu moved to 9-1 on the season with a 6-2 win after playing in No. 2 doubles for the first time. DU's top doubles team of juniors Peter Sallay and Charlie Miller added a 6-3 win to give the doubles point to DU.

Singles:
Denver sealed the team victory with straight-set wins in Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles, starting with a 6-2 6-4 finish from Sallay in the No. 3 spot. Joining him with a third-straight singles win was fellow junior Miller, who began with a 6-1 first-set win before adding another 6-4 second-set score line for DU.

Like Miller, Sancho Arbizu dropped just five total games across his two sets at No. 2 singles to mathematically clinch the Denver victory. He is now riding a team best-tying seven-match win streak – a mark that junior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta would equal later in the afternoon with his straight-set win at No. 1 singles.

The Nos. 4 and 5 singles matches would both go the distance with Denver players using multiple breaks to secure wins in the third set. Papajcik rallied after dropping the first set, losing just five games in the last two sets to earn his first win at No. 5 singles.

Graduate student Conner Olsen split the first two sets with ORU's Kevin Leuenberger, each player taking a 6-3 win. Olsen would run away with the final set to give DU the sweep.

No. 66 Denver continues Summit League play when it travels to Illinois State on Sunday, April 9, with the match set to begin at 12 p.m. CT/11 a.m. MT.
