Former Denver hockey player set for annual IIHF tournament in Europe

DENVER – Former Denver Pioneers hockey player Carter Mazur has been named to the United States National Team that will compete at the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Tempere, Finland, and Riga, Latvia from May 12-28, USA Hockey announced Thursday.

Mazur, 21, played two seasons at the University of Denver from 2021-2023 and won the 2022 NCAA Championship with the team before signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings on March 28. He was selected by Detroit in the third round at No. 70 overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Jackson, Michigan, native led the Pioneers and ranked tied for fifth in the nation in goals in 2022-23, recording a career-high 22 markers while playing in all 40 games. His six game-winning goals were tied for third in the country, and he also added 15 assists to finish the campaign with 37 points. A member of the All-NCHC Second Team, Mazur led DU with eight power-play tallies, recorded 32 penalty minutes, had a plus-19 rating and was a finalist for the NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year award.

An alternate captain as a sophomore in 2022-23, Mazur finished his collegiate career with 36 goals, 39 assists and 75 points while appearing in all 81 DU games. The forward was named the NCHC Rookie of the Year in 2021-22 and was a member of the conference's All-Rookie Team after recording 14 goals, 24 assists and 38 points as a freshman.

Mazur has represented the United States on two other occasions in international play, competing in both iterations of the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship. He played one game for Team USA in December 2021 before the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19 and in August 2022 in the reboot of the under-20 event. He was named one of the three best players on Team USA in the August competition after leading the Americans and placing second overall with five goals. He also had two assists in the five games.

The U.S. is in Group A of the annual men's tournament and will be playing at Nokia Arena in Tempere. The Americans are fourth-ranked team internationally and will play co-host Finland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, France, Austria and Hungry in the preliminary round from May 12-23. The backet quarterfinals are May 25 and the semifinals and finals are set for May 27-28.

Team USA has won four bronze medals in the last nine years at the tournament and has played for a medal in six of those events.
