MINTURN/NEDERLAND, Colo. – The entire Denver Pioneers ski team was in action on Friday as the alpine and Nordic squads competed in two different meets to continue a busy week of racing in Colorado. The alpiners wrapped up the Colorado Invitational with men's and women's giant slalom at Eldora Mountain Resort while the Nordic group opened up this year's Denver Invitational at Maloit Park.
The Pioneers picked up two wins on the day as freshman
Sara Rask won the women's GS at the CU Invitational in Nederland and senior
Bernhard Flaschberger earned his first victory of the season by taking the 5-kilometer freestyle at DU Invite in Minturn.
Denver finished third in the Colorado Invitational with 540 points. Utah won with 655 points while CU was second with 643 points.
Joining Rask in the top 10 in the women's giant slalom was junior
Nora Brand in seventh, while senior
Galena Wardle also scored for the Pios in 14th place. Sophomore
Cooper Cornelius led Denver in the men's giant slalom in seventh and junior
Trey Seymour placed 12th. Senior
Cole Puckett, who was designated as a non-team scorer, came in 14th and freshman
Adrian Minde Hunshammer was the squad's final scorer in 23rd.
On the other side of the Continental Divide, DU is in second place at its own invitational. Flaschberger won the 5K interval start in 14:09.0, and sophomore teammate
Andreas Kirkeng joined him on the podium in third place with a time of 14:47.7. Sophomore
Elijah Weenig was third to help the Pioneers tie Utah for the team win in the event.
In the women's 5K freestyle, freshman
Selma Andersen was the top Pioneer in 11th with a time of 17:26.0. Denver's other women's scorers were junior
Hanna Ray in 17th and sophomore
Bettina Burgess in 22nd.
The Pioneers picked up 149 total points on the day and trail the Utes, who have 199 points after recording three skiers on podiums. Walker Hall finished between Flaschberger and Kirkeng in the men's race, while Novie McCabe and Sophia Laulki were first and second in the women's event.
