DENVER – Incoming freshman
Sam Harris of the University of Denver hockey team was selected at No. 133 overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL Draft on Thursday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
Harris, 19, becomes the 129th Pioneer to be drafted and stretches the program's streak of having at least one player chosen to 22 straight years dating back to 2002.
The San Diego, California, native has spent the previous two seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League where he combined for 91 points (46g/45a) in 116 career games. Harris recorded personal bests in all three scoring categories last season with the Stampede, with his 30 goals tying for eighth-most in the USHL. He also added 26 assists for 56 points, finishing as a point-per-game player in 56 outings.
Prior to beginning his junior career with Sioux Falls in 2021-22, Harris played three years with Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in Faribault, Minnesota. He recorded 30 or more points each season with the SSM Sabres, including posting 21 goals and 16 assists in 36 contests in 2020-21.
Harris has represented the United States in international completion once before in his career, as he had two goals and helped the Americans win the gold medal at the 2022 World Junior-A Challenge.
A product of the San Diego Jr. Gulls program who also played for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks in 2017-18, Harris was in his last year of eligibility at the NHL Draft.
