DENVER – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs have named eight captains for the 2023-24 season, head coach
Alicia Hicken-Franklin announced on Tuesday.
"Today we announce an incredible group of captains for our 23-24 season," Hicken-Franklin said. "I look forward to working with each of them toward our team purpose and goals. This is an inspired group who are ready and capable of making a difference in continuing the success of our program. Our team has worked hard on our culture and direction and our captains have an important job leading their teammates and working with the coaching staff to be the best we can be. I am grateful to work with our incredible team of swimmers and divers every day.
The Denver women's program will be led by a trio of seniors in
Emmy Francell,
Ines Marin and
Annabeth Scalise and graduate student
Erika Remington.
Francell finished fourth in the 100 fly and 13
th in the 50 free at the Summit League Championships. The Austin, Texas, native was fifth on the team in the 50 free and 100 fly and sixth on the squad in the 100 free and 50 fly.
Marin was part of four relays that earned All-Summit League honors this past season to go with a first-place finish in the 200 free. At the CSCAA National Invitational Championships, Marin took fifth in the 200 free, and 800 free relay and ninth in the 400 free and 400 medley relays.
A backstroke specialist, Scalise was in the top-10 on the team in 2022-23 in the 50 back, 100 back and 200 back.
Remington is a two-time captain under Hicken-Franklin, and earned All-Summit League honors in six events in February, including five podium finishes. At the CSCAA National Invitational Championships a couple of weeks later, Remington finished eighth in the 50 free, and ninth in the 400 medley and 400 free relays.
Denver's men's program will be captained by senior
Alex Lynch and juniors
Nathan Cox,
Luca Foord and
Marco Nosack.
Lynch earned All-Summit League honors last season in a pair of relays and won the 200 breast at the Summit League Championships. A few weeks later, Lynch finished eighth in the 200 breast at the CSCAA National Invitational Championships and was part of the 18
th-place finishing 400 medley relay.
Cox's 2022-23 season was highlighted by a third-place finish on the one-meter board against Air Force and LSU and a fourth-place finish against UNLV. The year prior, Cox took third on the same board at the 2022 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, and fourth in the 3-meter dive.
Foord took seventh in the 200 breast at the league championships to earn All-Summit League honors. The Portland, Oregon, native was fourth on the team in the 50 breast, fourth on the team in the 100 breast and fifth for Denver in the 200 breast and 200 IM.
Nosack earned All-Summit League honors in five events, including two relays in 2022-23. A now two-time captain for Hicken-Franklin, Nosack won both IM events at the league championships, finished third in the 200 breast and was part of a winning 800-free relay and a second-place finish in the 400 free relay.
