Nora Brand Earns Collegiate Athlete of the Year Award

DU alpine skier recognized for 2023 accomplishments by Colorado Snowsports Museum Hall of Fame

DENVER – Senior alpine skier Nora Brand of the University of Denver has been named the Collegiate Athlete of the Year by the Colorado Snowsports Museum Hall of Fame for the 2023 season.

Brand placed in the top 10 in all 11 collegiate races she finished last winter as a junior and recorded eight top-five results. She also reached the podium for the first time in her career, taking the stand six times overall and earning two victories.

The Munich, Germany, native had some of her best results late in the season in Alaska, as she won the slalom events at both the Alaska Anchorage Invitational on Feb. 23 and RMISA Championships on Feb. 24. She also posted her best giant slalom placement of the year at the UAA Invite by coming in third on Feb. 21.

Brand was named to the All-RMISA First Team and earned two All-American awards, earning a second-team nod in giant slalom and was a first-team member in slalom. She was the national runner-up in slalom at the NCAA Championships by placing second and came in seventh in giant slalom in her debut at nationals.

Named DU's Most Improved Alpine Skier, Brand posted strong results in non-NCAA races in 2022-23 as well, winning the Nor-Am Cup women's slalom race in Stratton, Vermont, in early January and claiming the overall women's title at the 2022 Holiday Classic in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, two weeks earlier.  She also represented Germany at the 2022 FISU World University Games in January in Lake Placid, New York, finishing fifth in both the women's slalom and giant slalom races.

Brand is the women's recipient of the Collegiate Athlete of the Year award, as the University of Colorado Filip Forejtek is the 2023 men's winner. Brand will be recognized for her 2023 campaign this Sunday, Aug. 27 at the annual Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame awards ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, Colorado.

The other annual award honorees are Mikaela Shiffrin as Competitor of the Year, Kendall Gretsch as Adaptive Athlete of the Year, David and Renie Gorsuch for their Lifetime Achievement and SOS Outreach as the winner of the Top of the Hill Award.

The 2023 Colorado Snowsports Hall of Fame inductees are Cheryl Jensen, Hilaree Nelson, John Norton, Sandy Hildner and Seth Masia.

Sunday's event begins at 4:30 p.m. MT and ticket prices start at just $50 for adults, with all proceeds going to support the Colorado Snowsports Museum—a non-profit organization and the State of Colorado's official snow sports museum.
