DENVER – University of Denver women's basketball head coach
Doshia Woods is being featured in
Active Discovery's next Hometown Hero video, a look back at the challenges Woods' faced in her childhood, and how she continues to use those experiences to set a foundation for her life today.
"I'm so thankful for Active Discovery taking the time to come out to Denver to give me an opportunity to tell my story, a story that applies to so many in our country and in our world," Woods said.
The story highlights Woods' mindset of an individual who worked through tough circumstances in her youth, refused to accept life as a victim and is thriving now.
"You can't help the situation that you're born into," Woods said in the trailer. "A lot of it is generational. Some of us are born into circumstances that we can thrive in, and some of us are born into circumstances that we're going to need some help to thrive in. I was victim then, I'm a victim of my environment, but now I have the chance to be a successor of the decisions I get to make. Programs like this (Active Discovery) are important, because you realize there is life outside of the environment that you face every day as a kid."
Active Discovery is about active bodies, active minds, and healthy relationships. They offer Active Discovery Kits, Hometown Hero videos and Imagining Possibilities field trips to vulnerable children.
"The Hometown Hero videos tell real stories about real people who have overcome adversity to do great things," Executive Director and Founder of Active Discovery Mary Ann Sprague-Denison said. "Meeting
Doshia Woods was a highlight of my year, and I am so excited to share her story with the thousands of children we serve. Doshia is our first female hero, and she has already inspired me! Her adversities are so relatable to the kids that we serve, and her story will inspire us all to keep going. The facilitator and student worksheets we create help the children learn to glimpse in the rear-view mirror long enough to learn the lessons through our heroes who have lived the lessons. We then celebrate the windshield view filled with success, hope and a wide impact for good!
