DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team advanced multiple student-athletes in singles and doubles draws across both of its opening-weekend fall tournaments on Friday.
 
At the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu dropped just six games in his two singles matches to make it to Saturday's quarterfinals. After opening his round of 32 match with a bagel, he took an early double break lead in the second set before finishing it out, 6-2. In his round of 16 match, he again jumped out to early leads in both sets – 4-1 in the first and 5-0 in the second – and eventually won it in straight sets.
 
Senior Nicolas Herrero Cuesta fell in his first singles match of the tournament, claiming the first set from a break down but dropping the next two. In his consolation match, he broke for a 2-1 lead to set him up for a 6-3 win before claiming DU's second bagel of the day in the second set.
 
In Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the Bedford Cup in the Mountains, Denver collected six combined wins including two from the doubles team of junior Rikuto Yamaguchi and senior Charlie Miller. The Denver duo earned a 6-3 win in their first match before upsetting the No. 2 seed, 6-1, to advance to Saturday's semifinal.
 
In singles, graduate student Anish Sriniketh, too, found himself in a semifinal after winning his round of 16 and quarterfinal matches in the Lightning (A) Draw. Miller won his first singles match in the Raptor (B) Draw but fell in the quarterfinals. In the Falcon (C) Draw, No. 1-seed Yamaguchi received a bye into the quarterfinals and came back from a set down to move into the semifinals.
 
Play will continue at both tournaments on Saturday. In Milwaukee, the quarterfinals and semifinals for both singles and doubles are on the schedule, beginning at 9:00 a.m. CT/8:00 a.m. MT. At the Bedford Cup, the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals, plus the singles semifinals are set to be played, beginning at 9:00 a.m. MT.
