DU Women’s Soccer Opens League Play with 1-0 Win Over ORU

Denver posts fourth clean sheet of the season in Summit League opener

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team (5-1-4, 1-0-0 Summit) began Summit League play with a 1-0 win over Oral Roberts at University of Denver Soccer Stadium on Saturday evening.

The match's only goal came from junior Riley Baker header in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a cross from sophomore Lily O'Grady.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Julianne Sitch: "We talk a lot about having that shutout mentality and to keep teams locked up in their end. When it's 1-0 toward the end of the game and the other team is putting pressure on you, I thought that we handled it really well.

"It's hard to play against a good team and get those first three points with the shutout, so I'm very proud of the team for finishing out and playing the 90 minutes."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Freshman Molly Wissman earned her fourth shutout of the season.
  • Junior Samantha Dreiling set a new career high with her match-best five shots.
  • For the ninth match in a row, Denver reached double-digit shot attempts with 10.
  • DU has now outshot its opponent in eight of the last nine matches and holds a 166-74 lead in the shot margin during that stretch.
  • Denver allowed a season-low one shot on goal.
FIRST HALF:
16' | Baker found herself on the right end of a lovely cross from O'Grady, and the junior headed it home for her second goal of the season.

23' | Dreiling came up the middle of the pitch and had a look at the net near the edge of the 18-yard box, but ORU's keeper dove to keep it clear right.

40' | Denver earned a free kick two yards outside of the penalty area. Frost took it and nearly curled it under the crossbar but ultimately saw it go inches high.

SECOND HALF:
60' | MacMillan contained the ball at the edge of the box and tipped it up to Glover, who put it in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed on an offside call.

73' | Baker took an unexpected quick corner and got the ball off to Dreiling, whose shot narrowly missed wide.

81' | Dreiling again found herself inside the 18-yard box and juggled around before shooting toward the right post, but ORU punched the ball clear.

WHAT'S NEXT:
DU (5-1-4, 1-0-0 Summit) heads on the road for the first time in Summit League play, starting with its match at St. Thomas on Thursday, September 28, at 4 p.m. CT/3 p.m. MT.
