COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The University of Denver men's tennis team collected seven wins in eight matches to start the 2023 ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Thursday.
 
Denver's four singles players all advanced in straight sets to move into Friday's round of 32. Senior and No. 2 seed Nicolas Herrero Cuesta opened with a bagel and lost just three games in the second set in his opening match. No. 3-seeded junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu and No. 16-seed junior Marvin Schaber each posted a 6-2 set and a 6-3 set to move on. Finally, junior and No. 12 seeded Peter Sallay used a break in each of the first two sets to advance.
 
In doubles, Herrero Cuesta and Sancho Arbizu – also known as "Team Spain" – dropped just five games between their first two matches on Thursday en route to the quarterfinals and upset the No. 5-seeded team in the round of 16.
 
Play continues on Friday with the doubles quarterfinals and the singles rounds of 32 and 16, beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
