DENVER – University of Denver gymnast
Madison Ulrich was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the second week in a row, the Big 12 Conference announced on Wednesday.
In her second collegiate meet, the freshman increased her scores on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around over her debut scores from Week 1. She picked up three more podium finishes in Denver's meet against Arizona State including a second-straight runner-up finish in the all-around.
All four of her event scores contributed toward DU's 196.900 tally on Sunday including a 9.875 on bars that came despite the pressure of following a fall in the previous routine. She also scored a 9.900 on floor, her second such score in her young career.
Ulrich is the third Denver gymnast to earn Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors in consecutive weeks and the first since
Jessica Hutchinson in Weeks 9 and 10 of the 2021 season. She is one of eight DU gymnasts to capture Big 12 weekly honors in back-to-back weeks at least once in her career and the first since Hutchinson collected three-straight Gymnast of the Week nods in 2022.
This is the second Big 12 award of Ulrich's career and the second for a DU gymnast this season.
Ulrich and the No. 10-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team will welcome No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 11 UCLA and Stanford to Magness Arena on Sunday, January 21, in one of the most anticipated regular-season meets of the year.
