VERMILLION, SD -- Jordan Jones collected a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the South Dakota Coyotes 78-70 on the road Thursday.
In addition to Jones' double-double, the Pioneers (4-15, 1-5) were led by Emma Smith, who totaled 14 points and five assists, and by Emily Counsel, who added 11 points.
The Denver offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in 11 threes on 31 attempts. Smith was the most prolific shooter for the Pioneers, draining four treys in the contest.
How It Happened
Denver struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-8 at the end of the first quarter.
South Dakota kept adding to that lead, building a 26-8 advantage before Denver went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a three from Smith, to narrow its deficit to 26-19. The Pioneers continued to chip away, reducing the South Dakota lead to 33-32 heading into the break.
Denver and South Dakota both put up 15 points in the third quarter, keeping the deficit even at 48-47 entering the fourth. Denver knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 15 total points.
South Dakota kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 54-50 advantage before Denver went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Makayla Minett's layup, to seize a 55-54 lead with 7:39 to go in the contest. South Dakota re-asserted control, outscoring the Pioneers 24-15 the rest of the way to hand Denver the 78-70 loss. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
