Jones Notches Double-Double, Pioneers Fall to Idaho

DENVER, CO --Jordan Jones notched a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the Idaho Vandals, 60-51, in Hamilton Gymnasium on Wednesday.

The Pioneers (4-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Jones. Emily Counsel added 16 points and two blocks and Makayla Minett added two points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

How It Happened

After falling behind 2-0, Denver went on a 5-0 run with 8:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Counsel, to take a 5-2 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 13-12 advantage. Denver got out and ran in the period, scoring three points on the break.

Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 5:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Jones, to increase its lead to 25-18. The Vandals cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 28-23 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

After intermission, Denver held on to its advantage and owned a 40-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Idaho proceeded to take a 46-40 lead before Denver went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jones' three, to shrink the deficit to 46-45 with 2:41 to go in the contest. Idaho responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 60-51. Denver took advantage of six Idaho turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
