Pioneers Drop Four Set Match to South Dakota

VERMILLION, SD --The Denver volleyball team lost to the South Dakota Coyotes in four sets (23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-27) Thursday at Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The loss dropped Denver's record to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in Summit League action.

The Pioneers were led by a double-double from Ava Reynolds, who registered 19 kills and 10 digs on the day. Cassie Davis also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Alayna Finucan chipped in for with 25 digs to go with three blocks from Kate Perryman.

SET 1 | The Pioneers found themselves in an early deficit, losing a hard-fought first set 25-23. Denver trailed by as many as six points as South Dakota grabbed the advantage for good at 16-15 in a set that was tied up eight times before the Coyotes took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 2 | A 25-22 second-set loss put Denver in a 2-0 hole in the match. South Dakota grabbed the advantage for good at 23-22 in a set that was knotted up nine times before the Coyotes took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Denver fought back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the match in the third stanza. The Pioneers won the set 27-25 powered by a strong performance on the attacking side. Denver registered a .366 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set win. The Pioneers took their first and last lead of the match at 25-24 and rode it to victory.

SET 4 | Denver couldn't build off the set-three victory and fell in the fourth set 27-25 to drop the match. The Pioneers fell in a close set, losing in a stanza that was tied six times and had two lead changes.
