[6/1] Denver Drops First Match of the Season at [1/2] Pittsburgh

The Pioneers will resume Summit League play at Kansas City on Saturday

PITTSBURGH – The [6/1] University of Denver men's soccer program's unbeaten run to start the season came to an end on Monday night in a 2-0 loss to [1/2] Pittsburgh at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Scoring Summary
[6] Denver:
[1] Pittsburgh:
Sullivan 39' (Dahl, Sahmkov), Grening 51' (Maillefaud, Vilamitjana)

First Half:
6' Pitt's Guilherme Feitosa took the first shot of the evening, but his attempt right off a Denver turnover was high and left of the frame.
23' Sam Bassett took the match's second shot, and the first for the Pioneers, but his shot from near the penalty spot was blocked by his own teammate Oje Ofunrein that was knocked down in the build-up.
26' Ronan Wynne did a great job of defending to alter Pitt's second shot off the target.
35' Wynne cleared a Luis Sahmkow weakly-taken shot from the middle of the box off the line. Uncertain if the shot would have gone wide, Wynne rushed to his goal line and cleared the danger.
39' Michael Sullivan opened the scoring with a deserved breakthrough for the hosts. Luis Sahmkov and Lasse Dahl combined down the right and played it into the middle of the box to the run of Sullivan who slotted it across his body and inside the near post.

Second Half:
46' Casper Svendby nearly made it 2-0 to the home side, but his shot was off the woodwork, and then Eben McIntyre's shot right off that but missed the target.
48' Ian Smith took Denver's first shot on goal of the match, but it was pushed out by the Pitt keeper and out for a corner. Trevor Wright got on the end of Smith's corner kick service, but his header, the Pios second shot on goal of the match was right at the Pitt keeper.
51' Casper Grening crossed up his defender at the top of the box and picked out the opposite top corner to double the home side's advantage.
73' Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week Ian Smith played a dangerous service across the frame of goal, but none of Denver's forwards were able to get on the end of it as the Pios looked to halve the deficit.
78' As the ball was recycled in off a Denver free kick on the Denver left, Oje Ofunrein was able to briefly get a shot away, but it was also blocked in-front.

UP NEXT:
The Pioneers will fly back to the Mile High City before heading to Kansas City this weekend for the first of six-straight Summit League matches to end the regular season. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 6 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on the Summit League Network. Denver has a two-point lead in the Summit League table through two matches.
