Jones and Smith Notch Double-Doubles in Denver's Victory Over Christian Brothers

DENVER, CO --Jordan Jones and Emma Smith both recorded double-doubles to lead the Denver women's basketball team past the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, 78-48, on Friday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Pioneers (1-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Jones, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Smith added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Laia Monclova chipped in as well with 11 points and two blocks.

Denver out-rebounded Christian Brothers 41-29 in Friday's game, led by Smith and Jones' combined 20 boards.

Denver's defense held Christian Brothers to only 30.8 percent shooting from the field, including 22.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Pioneers also limited Jada Hood to 4-of-16 shooting in the game. The Buccaneers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed seven second chance points while Denver cleared 37 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After playing to a 13-13 tie early in the game, Denver went on a 5-0 run with 1:27 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Mary Wilson, to take an 18-13 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.

Denver built that first quarter lead to 24-17 before going on a 12-0 run starting at the 6:25 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 36-17. The Buccaneers cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 38-26 advantage heading into halftime. Denver forced four Christian Brothers turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.

Denver wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 12-0 run to expand its lead further to 50-26 with 3:56 to go in the third. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-33 edge. Denver took advantage of seven Christian Brothers turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of takeaways.

Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Smith's layup, to grow the lead to 70-42 with 4:10 to go in the contest. The Pioneers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 78-48 win. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
