DENVER, CO --Jordan Jones, Emma Smith and Angelina Robles combined to score 45 of Denver's 60 total points as the Pioneers defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 60-50, at home on Saturday.
The Pioneers (3-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Jones, who had 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Smith tacked on 14 points and three steals and Robles chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Denver defense held UC Irvine shooters to only 30.2 percent from the field, including 14.3 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 7-6 advantage, Denver went on an 11-0 run with 5:06 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Emily Counsel, to increase its lead to 18-6. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-10 advantage. Denver did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
The Pioneers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 30-25 edge. Denver dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 12 points close to the basket.
Denver continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Laia Monclova, to expand its lead further to 40-31 with 5:29 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Anteaters had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 47-39 edge. Denver took advantage of six UC Irvine turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Robles' three, to grow the lead to 56-46 with 4:06 to go in the contest. The Pioneers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 60-50 win. Denver fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.
