Denver Beats UCCS Ahead of California Road Trip

Nicholas Shogbonyo had a career-high 24 points in the win

DENVER – The University of Denver men's basketball program had four players in double figures led by junior transfer Nicholas Shogbonyo in Denver's 94-87win over UCCS on Tuesday night inside Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Pioneers (6-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Nicholas Shogbonyo, who had 24 points and two steals. DeAndre Craig added 17 points, five assists and two steals and Sebastian Akins chipped in as well with 17 points off of the bench.

Denver took advantage of great ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 16 assists on 33 made field goals. DeAndre Craig's five assists paced the Pioneers.

Denver forced 19 UC-Colorado Springs turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Tuesday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 32 points on the other end of the floor. Josh Pickett led the way individually with three steals.

  • Denver made 13 three-pointers on Tuesday night, its third double-figure total from beyond the arc in the last four games, and its fourth of the season.
  • Nicholas Shogbonyo finished with a career-high 24 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
After falling behind 17-15, Denver went on a 22-0 run with 13:41 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Akins, to take a 37-17 lead. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 49-35 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 49 points.

Denver kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Isaiah Addo-Ankrah's three, to grow the lead to 60-45 with 15:44 to go in the contest. The Mountain Lions narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pioneers still held on the rest of the way for the 94-87 win. Denver shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 45 points.
