DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones notched her ninth career double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds to help the Denver women's basketball team take down the Western Colorado Mountaineers, 64-58, at home on Wednesday night.
Jones led the Pioneers (6-6) while Emma Smith tacked on eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Alaisha Brown chipped in as well with four points and two steals.
Denver grabbed 33 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Western Colorado's 29, led by Jones' 10 boards.
The Denver defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, forcing 13 Western Colorado turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brown's two steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-6, Denver went on a 9-0 run with 4:07 left in the first quarter to take a 15-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Denver did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 15 points close to the basket.
Denver kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:18 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Angelina Robles, to increase its lead to 36-23. The Mountaineers cut into that lead, but the Pioneers still enjoyed a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime. Denver was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 21 points.
Denver continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Coryn Watts, to expand its lead further to 48-36 with 3:28 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Mountaineers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 52-42 edge.
The Pioneers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Denver got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
