DENVER, CO -- Jordan Jones, Makayla Minett and Angelina Robles combined to score 50 of Denver's 65 total points as the Pioneers defeated the UMKC Kangaroos, 65-50, at home Thursday.
Jones led the Pioneers (5-16, 2-6) with 20 points and six rebounds. Minett tacked on a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Robles chipped in as well with 12 points, four assists and four steals.
Denver grabbed 32 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to UMKC's 26, led by Minett's 12 boards.
Denver forced 14 UMKC turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday's game. The Pioneers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Robles' four steals led the way for Denver.
How It Happened
Denver started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a three from Emma Smith, to take an early lead with 7:18 left in the first quarter. The Pioneers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-14 advantage. Denver relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
The Pioneers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 30-28.
After intermission, Denver rallied to tie it up at 32-32 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Robles, to grab a 37-32 lead with 7:28 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Kangaroos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Pioneers still entered the fourth quarter with a 44-41 edge. Denver took advantage of five UMKC turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
Denver kept widening that lead, expanding it to 53-47 before going on a 12-0 run to grow the lead to 65-47 with 33 seconds to go in the contest. The Kangaroos narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pioneers still cruised the rest of the way for the 65-50 win. Denver took advantage of four UMKC turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
