DU Women’s Tennis Posts 4-2 Win Over Portland

Denver begins weekend in Oregon with neutral-site victory on Saturday

EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Denver women's tennis team (5-2, 0-0 Summit) won its third-straight match with a 4-2 neutral-site victory over Portland on Saturday.

DU dropped the doubles point before winning four of the five singles matches to finish, securing the team victory at the University of Oregon's Student Tennis Center.

Doubles:
Denver and Portland split results in the top two doubles matches with DU sophomores Caroline Driscoll and Louise Wikander capturing a bagel win at No. 2 doubles – their second such score already this season. The point came down to a close tiebreak on Court 3 with Portland taking the win, 7-4.

Singles:
Driscoll dropped just two games at No. 4 singles to level the dual at 1-all. For the third match in a row, she won the first set in a bagel and then sealed the win with a 6-2 second set.

The Pilots retook the overall lead after winning the No. 2 singles match, but Denver took the next three points to clinch the win. Pulling DU level again was freshman Karsyn Evans, who made her anticipated collegiate debut in losing just three games and finishing with a bagel in the second set.

DU claimed its first lead of the day with help from sophomore Claudia Martinez de Velasco, who won her first singles match of the year and did so after moving up to No. 5 singles after spending the last four matches at No. 6.

Wikander clinched the Denver win with a third-straight win at No. 3 singles, doing so in a comeback from a set down. After losing the first, she only dropped four more games, responding with a 6-1 win in the second set. She held a break lead early in the third set but was broken back for 3-all before breaking yet again to retake the lead and then closed it out, 6-3.

The only match not to finish was No. 1 singles, which saw junior Andrea Burguete Beltran early in a third set when Wikander's win clinched the dual for DU.
