FARGO, ND -- Jordan Jones scored 24 points, but the Denver women's basketball team fell to the North Dakota State Bison 86-65 on the road Saturday.
The Pioneers (7-19, 4-9) had two players score in double figures, led by Jones, who had 24 points and five assists. Angelina Robles added 11 points and two steals and Makayla Minett added four points and two steals.
The Denver defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 15 North Dakota State turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Minett's two steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-7, Denver went on a 5-0 run with 2:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jones, to narrow its deficit to 18-12. The Pioneers continued to close the gap, cutting the North Dakota State lead to 20-16 by the end of the first period.
The Pioneers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 43-25 halftime deficit.
North Dakota State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 61-42 advantage before Denver went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Jones, to trim its deficit to 61-47 with 47 seconds to go in the third. North Dakota State countered and stretched its lead to 63-47 heading into the fourth. Denver took advantage of six North Dakota State turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways.
Denver could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 86-65. Denver took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
