DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team (8-0, 0-0 Summit) collected its second sweep of the 2024 dual season with a 4-0 win over LMU at Denver Tennis Park on Sunday.
With the win, DU extended the second-longest win streak to begin a season in the program's Division I history, moving to 8-0 with Sunday's victory.
Coach's Notes:
From head coach
Drew Eberly: "I thought we did a good job of coming out quick out of the gates in doubles and putting some scoreboard pressure on them, which continued into singles. Daniel (Sancho Arbizu) at No. 1 did a great job of getting a point up on the board quickly and played very well. There were some pretty tight first sets and some pretty tight matches, but we were able to get the win today; and we're happy to be 8-0.
"We've got a tough road test next week at Wisconsin, which is a very tough place to play. So we're going to have to prepare hard for that, but I'm very proud of the guys going 2-0 on the weekend, and we're looking forward to next week."
Doubles:
Denver dropped just four games in the two completed doubles matches on its way to winning the first point of the day. The new team of graduate student
Marvin Schaber and junior
Daniel Sancho Arbizu lost a single game at No. 2 doubles, giving the duo their first win together after debuting as a team on Friday.
Senior
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and junior
Rikuto Yamaguchi took over the No. 1 slot for the second match in a row and clinched the doubles point for Denver with a 6-3 win.
Singles:
Sancho Arbizu claimed his second win on the day, doing so at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, and started with his second-straight 6-1 set when including his win in doubles. He backed it up with a bagel in the second set – equaling his best singles result in his collegiate career.
Like his countryman, Herrero Cuesta moved to 8-0 on the season in singles, winning in straight sets for the fourth time in 2024. He began the match with a 6-2 win in the first set before facing a tiebreak in the second set, which he easily took, 7-1.
Sophomore
Raffaello Papajcik clinched the dual for Denver with his second-straight win, also doing so in straight sets including one at 6-2, just as he did for his season's first win on Friday against Boise State.
In the unfinished matches, Schaber was up a set and on serve late in the second at No. 3 singles. Senior
Charlie Miller also won his first set at No. 5 singles and was up a break in the second. Fellow senior
Peter Sallay fought back after dropping the first set in a tiebreak but took the second, 6-3, to force a third set that did not complete a game when the dual was decided.
