Matt Davis Perfect in No. 3 Pioneers' 8-1 Win

DU hockey defeats Miami RedHawks

DENVER – Junior forward Tristan Broz matched a career high with four points and goaltender Matt Davis stopped all 27 shots in a clean-sheet performance on Saturday night as the No. 3 Denver Pioneers hockey team defeated the Miami RedHawks 8-1 at Magness Arena.

"Loved how the guys responded from last night to tonight. Defended hard, played fast, show up offensively," said Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle. "Their goaltender was good again. I saw that we executed at a higher level, and that's hard to do that on back-to-back nights. Give them a lot of credit. They came in here, they played extremely hard. I wish them the best of luck down the stretch."

Though Denver allowed a goal, Davis still finished with zero goals against and a perfect 1.000 save percentage on the evening due to how Miami scored. The RedHawks' lone tally came during their own delayed penalty with 1:16 left in the first period after the puck was redirected the length of the ice and into an open DU net.  Davis was on the bench at the time while DU pulled him for the extra attacker.

"It's actually kind of funny; I looked at [fellow goaltender] Jack Caruso on the bench there and we just laughed," Davis said of the rare goal. "There is really no other way to take it. It just happens sometimes, and you just got to shake it off and do your job."

Davis also made an impact offensively, as he also added an assist—the second of his career and second in three games.

Broz led all scorers in the game with a goal and three assists, marking his fourth career four-point outing and his second-ever contest with three helpers. Freshman defenseman Boston Buckberger tied a career high with three assists, and fellow rookie Kieran Cebrian recorded his first multi-point game with a pair of helpers.

Junior forward Jack Devine had two points (one goal, one assist) and classmate Sean Behrens, who was playing in his 100th career game, also recorded multiple points with two assists.

Four DU freshmen tallied in the contest, as forwards Sam Harris, Miko Matikka and Alex Weiermair and defenseman Zeev Buium all found the back of the net. Sophomores Rieger Lorenz and Jared Wright also scored.

Denver scored two greasy goals around the crease in the first period from Broz and Weiermair to take a 2-0 lever before Robby Drazner got credit for Miami's goal on the fortuitous bounce. The Pioneers responded by adding three goals in both the second and third period and outshot the RedHawks 21-7 in the middle frame.

DU finished with 47-28 edge in overall shots on goal for its second-highest shot total of the season. The Pioneers capitalized on two of five power-play chances, firing 18 shots while a man-up.

Miami goaltender Bruno Bruveris started and made 20 saves before being replaced following Wright's goal at 9:44 of the second period that made it a 5-1 game. Carter McPhail finished the contest in net and stopped 11-of-14 shots.

UP NEXT: Denver now begins a three-game road swing as the team travels for two games at St. Cloud State next weekend before a home-and-home set with Colorado College to wrap up the regular season on March 8-9.

QUOTABLES
Richard and Kitzia Goodman Hockey Head Coach David Carle
On the difference in tonight's game: "It was nice being able to extend the lead. Certainly we weren't able to do that a night ago—we go in 2-1 going into the third period. So to get it up 5-1 was really good. Again the offensive execution, how fast we played, certainly helped."

On playing hard: "I think that was important. We weren't happy with our 60-minute effort last night in finishing the game off properly. We were able to do that tonight. That was a big point of emphasis for us. Very happy we were able to get that done."

Junior Goaltender Matt Davis
On the win: "I mean it was a fun one. Guys battled hard. We had some pretty big blocks, and it was fun to play for them tonight."

On staying mentally focused when he's not facing a lot of shots: "Just focus on my breathing and making sure I'm tracking the puck when it's going down the ice. I'm able to get puck handles in, so I'm able to stay in the game normally. I just really focus on my breathing and stay in it."
