DENVER – The University of Denver men's tennis team (3-0, 0-0 Summit) captured its first sweep over Utah in DU's Division I history with a 4-0 win at Denver Tennis Park on Friday.
Denver rallied to win the doubles point before adding three straight-sets wins in singles to clinch the victory
Doubles:
DU got halfway to the doubles point with a 6-1 win on Court 2 from senior
Nicolas Herrero Cuesta and junior
Rikuto Yamaguchi after rattling off six consecutive games.
Denver's No. 1 doubles team of graduate students
Marvin Schaber and
Anish Sriniketh clawed back from a 1-3 deficit to get back on serve at 3-4 before breaking yet again in the match's final game.
Junior
Daniel Sancho Arbizu and sophomore
Raffaello Papajcik held a 5-4 break lead in their No. 3 doubles match, also after trailing by a break early, though their match was abandoned.
Singles:
Schaber dropped just two games at No. 3 singles to give Denver to 2-0 overall lead. Each set followed nearly identical pathways to 6-1 conclusions with Schaber going up 2-1 and then 5-1 in both.
Herrero Cuesta came back from an early break down in No. 1 singles to take the first set, 6-4, before locking up a bagel in the second – his second-straight singles match with a 6-0 set.
Like Schaber, Sancho Arbizu went up 2-1, then 4-1 and 5-1 before winning his first set, 6-2, in the No. 2 singles match. The second set began on serve before he began to pull away with a 3-2 lead and then added another break for 5-2, eventually securing another 6-2 set to give the dual to Denver.
In the unfinished matches, Sriniketh traded breaks in his first before getting a final break late for 7-5. His second set was on serve when the dual was clinched. Yamaguchi dropped his opening set but forced a third set with a 7-5 win of his own. In his first singles match of the season, senior
Charlie Miller also lost his first set but had things on equal terms at 2-all in the second.
