DENVER – The University of Denver women's tennis team (4-2, 0-0 Summit) won its second match in a row against a Power-5 opponent on Sunday, defeating Iowa, 4-1, at Denver Tennis Park.
After Denver won the doubles point for second match in a row, the Hawkeyes evened up the match at 1-1 with a win in the first singles match to conclude. DU responded with three-straight wins in singles to clinch the victory.
Doubles:
DU fought back from an early deficit in doubles, dropping the No. 3 match before winning at Nos. 1 and 2. For the second time this season, Denver's No. 1 team of graduate student
Britt Pursell and junior
Andrea Burguete Beltran won their match, equaling their 6-3 win in the season opener against Air Force. The doubles point came down to Court 2 where sophomores
Caroline Driscoll and
Louise Wikander won a back-and-forth battle with a late break and a 7-5 scoreline.
Singles:
Iowa took the first singles match of the day, but DU reclaimed the lead off a three-set match from Pursell at No. 2 singles. The graduate student won the first set before facing a tighter second set, giving up a break late to end up in a third set. She regrouped and equaled her first-set score, 6-2, to put DU up, 2-1.
Wikander put Denver within a point of the dual win, scoring her fourth straight-sets win in singles of the season. She faced her first tiebreak of 2024 and came out victorious with a minibreak lead before taking the second set, 6-4.
Driscoll clinched the win for DU for the second match in a row. As she did in the weekend's first dual, she began singles play with a bagel in the first set. Iowa landed a 6-4 second set to force a decider where the DU sophomore flipped the script to take the third set with her own 6-4.
The remaining two matches were each in third sets when they were abandoned after Denver secured the win. Beltran held a break lead at No. 1 singles while sophomore
Claudia Martinez de Velasco forced a third set after dropping the first.
