STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Graduate student
Jane Earley found the back of the net with 14 seconds remaining to push the [14] University of Denver women's lacrosse team past the [11] Stony Brook Seawolves, 8-7, on Monday afternoon.
Julia Gilbert led the Pioneers with four goals, earning her fifth hat trick this season. Earley was the only other multi-goal scorer in the game with a pair, while
Lauren Black and
Caroline Colimore also tallied goals in the contest.Â
Graduate student
Sam Thacker led the defensive effort with three ground balls and a trio of caused turnovers, while
Megan Klingenberg earned a pair.
Abby Jenkins led Denver in the circle with four draw controls.
Emelia Bohi made a strong showing in goal with six saves.
Stony Brook struck early in the first quarter, and held the Pioneers scoreless for nearly 13 minutes before
Caroline Colimore connected with the equalizer off a pass from
Olivia Penoyer. The Pioneers and the Seawolves traded goals early in the second, but Stony Brook took a one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.Â
The Seawolves built their largest lead of the game to start the third quarter, building their lead to three. Black took the momentum back for Denver with a man up goal, followed by back to back scores by Gilbert to even the contest.
Gilbert scored another pair of goals late in the fourth to give Denver its first lead of the day with just under five minutes remaining. All-American Ellie Masera equalized the game for the Seawolves, but Earley grabbed the ball off an attempted turnover by Stony Brook to bury the game winner behind the head of goalkeeper Emily Manning.
The Seawolves were led offensively by Masera and Charlotte Verhurst who earned a trio of goals each. Manning made six saves between the pipes.
Denver moves to 4-3 on the season.Â
