[14] Denver Tops [RV] Stanford in Defensive Battle

DENVER -  The [14] University of Denver women's lacrosse team defeated the [RV] Stanford Cardinal on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Olivia Penoyer led the Denver offensive effort with her first hat trick in the Crimson and Gold and a pair of helpers. The Pioneers mounted a balanced offense with goals also coming from Lauren Black, Jane Earley, Ryan Dineen and Kyra Obert

Bryn McCaughey scooped up five ground balls for the Pios while the hot pink defense caused 11 turnovers to Stanford's nine. Goalkeeper Emelia Bohi made eight saves in net and Sam Thacker and Abby Jenkins each picked up a trio of wins in the draw circle.

The Cardinal struck first on a free position shot less than a minute into the first quarter for their first and only lead of the game. Penoyer scored her first of three goals in the contest off an assist from Black to open scoring for Denver. DU scored twice more in the first half and held Stanford scoreless for the remainder to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

Denver and Stanford traded goals to start the third quarter before the Pios pulled away thanks to marks from Earley and Black. The Cardinal scored two goals in the final minute of the third quarter to cut their deficit to 7-5. DU responded with two quick strikes to start the final frame of play and held Stanford scoreless to complete the victory, 10-5.
