DENVER - The University of Denver women's lacrosse team defeated the UConn Huskies, 19-8 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Big East Conference opener.
After falling behind 0-3 to start the game, the University of Denver women's lacrosse team went on an 8-1 run to recapture the lead, an offensive effort led by fifth year 
Olivia Penoyer. After notching an assist on the first goal of the game by 
Lauren Black, Penoyer connected off a pass from 
Jane Earley to tie the game at four, the first of her trio of goals in the contest. 
Julia Gilbert and Black also each earned a hat trick to lead Denver in scoring. The Pioneers compiled a well-rounded offense with nine different players recording goals, and multi-goal games from Earley, 
Ryan Dineen, and 
Sloane Kipp. Redshirt Junior 
Raegan Wilson earned her first goal since missing the second half of the 2023 season due to injury. 
Junior goalkeeper 
Emelia Bohi earned the win with nine saves in the contest while UConn's Landyn White made 17 stops between the posts.
Denver's hot pink defense racked up 11 caused turnovers, including three from 
Bryn McCaughey and 
Payton Vaughn. 
Sam Thacker also earned a pair of caused turnovers and a trio of ground balls. Senior 
Abby Jenkins led the Pios in the circle with eight draw controls while Black picked up four in the contest. 
Kate Shaffer led UConn with five goals and Madelyn George picked up eight wins in the draw circle.
