DENVER – University of Denver gymnast
Madison Ulrich was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for sixth time this season, the conference announced on Tuesday.
The Denver freshman matched her career highs in the all-around, and on beam and floor in DU's win at No. 10 Michigan on March 15. She also added a podium finish with her 9.925 on bars and contributed all four of her scores to DU's 197.750, which became the second-highest road score and eighth-highest overall score in program history.
On floor, she equaled her personal best of 9.925, contributing to DU's 49.550 that tied the third-highest away score and 10
th-highest overall score in Denver history. Her career high-tying 9.875 on beam came with the added pressure of needing a hit routine to help DU not count a fall from its first competitor in the lineup, and she also needed a hit on vault given that DU competed with just five student-athletes on the event, leaving no room for error.
Ulrich finished the year with six of the 11 possible Newcomer of the Week awards. In total, Denver gymnasts combined for 13 weekly Big 12 Conference honors this year with senior
Jessica Hutchinson adding four Gymnast of the Week nods, junior
Mia Hebinck earning two Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week awards, and junior
Momoko Iwai winning Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week once.
The No. 8-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team begins the postseason at the 2024 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, hosted by No. 1 Oklahoma, on Saturday, March 23.
