PREVIEW: [8/10] Denver Hosts St. John’s Under the Lights Friday

The Pioneers and Red Storm will faceoff at 6 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium

DENVER – The [8/10] University of Denver men's lacrosse program will play game two of its five-game BIG EAST slate on Friday night when the Pioneers host St. John's under the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium Lights at 6 p.m. MT. Both teams won their BIG EAST openers last weekend and enter Friday night 1-0 in league play.  
 
SERIES HISTORY:
Denver holds a 10-0 advantage in the series, including five wins at PBLS. The programs have met once in all 10 full seasons since the Pioneers joined the BIG EAST in 2014. A year ago St. John's put its biggest scare in the series history, but the Pioneers used a strong fourth quarter to pull out a 12-10 road win.
 
LAST TIME OUT:
Michael Lampert finished with a four-point afternoon on two goals and and two assists to lead the offense, Jimmy Freehill had 6CTs and Malcolm Kleban made six second-half saves to lead Denver to a 9-6 win at Villanova last Saturday. FULL RECAP
 
SEVEN-STRAIGHT WEEKS IN THE TOP-10
Earlier in the 2024 season, Denver rejoined the top-5 for the first time since 2021, the top-4 for the first time since 2018 and sat at the top pot nationally for the first time since 2017. After starting the campaign outside the top-10, Denver has spent the last eight weeks inside the top-10.
 
UNFRIENDLY PIPES
  • Denver hit a post or crossbar 36 times in 2019, compared to its opponents 13.
  • The Pioneers hit 17 pipes to its opponents 5 in 2020.
  • Denver hit 40 pipes in 2021 compared to its opponents 21
  • DU hit the post 32 times in 2022, compared to 22 pipes for its opponents.
  • Denver hit the post 17 times in 2023, compared to its opponents 16 times.
  • Denver has only hit one pipe in the last three games, but the 6-season total is 160-92. 11 different players have hit a pipe led by JJ Sillstrop's three pipes in 2024.
RESET!
  • Denver has 17 goals off 33 resets in its first nine games of the 2024 season.
  • The Pioneers have limited opponents to eight goals in 34 reset chances this year.
  • In wins, the Pioneers are 14-of-28 on reset opportunities, while DU's opponents are only 3-of-23.

  • Since turning Division I ahead of the 1999 season, the Pioneers have had players from 35 different states.

  • Last season's roster added three states to that list this season in Iowa (Provenza), Kansas (Eldred) and Utah (Caldwell).
  • The Pios have had 20+ from seven states: Colorado (100), Connecticut (32), California(27), New Jersey(26), Maryland(24), Ohio (22), New York (21).
  • Denver's DI student-athletes also cover three provinces of Canada: Alberta (2), B.C. (15) and Ontario (16).
