DENVER – Lauren Black had a career-high eight points and
Jane Earley, Ryan Dineen and
Sloane Kipp all finished with four goals to lead the [13/14] University of Denver women's lacrosse program past Arizona State 21-11 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
KEY PERFORMANCES:
Black had a hat trick and a career-high five assists to lead the Pioneers offense. Dineen had two assists to Black to go with her four goals for a six-point afternoon.
Olivia Penoyer continued her elite distribution this season with four assists to go with a tally of her own for a five-point day.
Julia Gilbert (2-1) and
Caroline Colimore (2-0) rounded out Denver's six multi-goal scorers on the afternoon.
Denver made adjustments in the draw game at halftime. Arizona State held a 11-7 advantage in the category at the intermission before the Pioneers won 13 of the last 15, including all nine in the third quarter to control the possessions in the second half.
Trinity McPherson was one shy of a new career-high with seven draws secured, while
Abby Jenkins hauled in six and Black brought in four.
McPherson had three caused turnovers to co-lead the Denver defense with
Payton Vaughn. Vaughn added five ground balls to her day to lead the Pioneers, while
Bryn McCaughey picked up four.
Emelia Bohi made eight saves between the pipes for the Pioneers.
NOTES:
- The Pioneers win was their eighth-straight victory.
- Denver scored 20+ goals for the third-straight game, the first time the Pioneers have done that in three-straight since March of 2008.
- The Pioneers finished 80% (4-of-5) from the free-position arc.
- DU scored four goals in woman-up situations, the fourth time this season the Pioneers have had at least four. Four woman-up goals is the second-most in the program's Division I history (6 vs. San Diego State in 2024).
- Denver finished with 10 caused turnovers, the 11th game this season the Pioneers have finished in double figures.
- Julia Gilbert wasted no time extending her team-high point streak to 37 games. On the current run, Gilbert has 102G-17A-119P.
- Lauren Black extended her active goal streak in the first quarter to nine games (19 goals in the streak).
- Jane Earley completed her third hat trick of the season in the first half. Earley's hat trick was the 45th of her collegiate career. Earley finished with four goals, a DI career-high for the former Middlebury star.
- Caroline Colimore's two first half goals gave her multiple goals for the fourth-consecutive game.
- Ryan Dineen scored three goals in the third quarter, her second-straight hat trick and the sixth of her Pioneer career.
- Olivia Penoyer, who entered the weekend sixth in the country in assists among active players, finished with four assists, her eighth game this season with at least three helpers.
- Sloane Kipp finished with four goals, her second hat trick of the season and the eighth of her career.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter:
Julia Gilbert opened the scoring to get the afternoon started, a free-position goal for her 42
nd tally of the season.
Lauren Black was the last part of a Denver weave down the right alley to make it 2-0 and then
Sloane Kipp found the back of the net 29 seconds later to race Denver out to a 3-0 lead.
Following Arizona State's first of the day,
Jane Earley scored from the arc for her first of four goals in the opening 30 minutes.
Caroline Colimore's 18
th of the season came from free-position arc as well to cancel out another Arizona goal and make it a 5-2 ballgame with 5:47 to go in the frame. Earley's second capped the scoring in the opening frame at 6-2.
Second Quarter:
Arizona State went on a 3-0 run in the first 1:45 of the second quarter to suddenly trim the Denver lead to 6-5.
The Pioneers responded with three of the next four to push their lead to 9-6 with 7:29 to play in the half. Earley's hat trick goal started the run before Colimore's second canceled out a Sun Devils tally to make it 8-6 with 8:03 to go. Earley's fourth of the afternoon came with 7:29 to go.
Ng Teagan closed out the first-half scoring with 5:44 to go to send the teams into the locker room at 9-7.
Third Quarter:
Denver opened the second half with six-straight goals to stretch its lead out to 15-7 and force an Arizona State timeout.
Olivia Penoyer began the half by finishing a feed from Gilbert to make it 10-7. Black scored her 25
th of the season to make it a four-goal game before assisting two-straight goals to Dineen and Gilbert to quickly stretch the lead to 13-7 with 10:35 to play in the frame.
Dineen scored two goals 26 seconds apart to complete a third-quarter hat trick to make it a 15-7 game with 7:05 to go.
Arizona State stopped the run briefly with 5:09 to go, but the Pioneers scored the final three of the frame to make it 18-8 heading into the fourth. Kipp scored all three goals in the run, scoring three times 1:32 apart off two assists from Black and the fourth assist of the day from Penoyer.
Fourth Quarter:
Black on the woman-up and another goal from Dineen made it a 20-8 game with 9:25 to go in regulation. Arizona State responded with three-straight in less than six minutes to trim the Denver lead to 20-11 with 1:55 to go.
Lindsey Wilmot capped off the scoring on Sunday afternoon with the first goal of her career.
UP NEXT:
Denver jumps back into BIG EAST play on the road next Saturday when the Pioneers take on Villanova. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m. MT. The Pioneers will then stay in Philadelphia for a neutral site match-up with Yale at St. Joe's on Monday at 12:30 p.m. MT.
