DENVER – The No. 43-ranked University of Denver men's tennis team (21-0, 5-0 Summit) is the No. 1 seed for the 2024 Summit League Tennis Championships and will begin play with a semifinal match against No. 4 seed North Dakota on Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT in Waukee, Iowa.
DU enters the postseason as the only undefeated Division I men's tennis team in the country, already surpassing the program record for most wins in a single season at 21 – two more than the previous record of 19 in 2010.
Denver captured its fifth-straight Summit League regular-season title and its ninth overall since joining the League in 2013-14. The Pioneers are seeking their sixth Summit League tournament championship and their first since 2021.
Last Time Out:
Denver finished the regular season with two 7-0 sweeps in its final two Summit League matches of the year: against Oral Roberts on April 12 and then against Illinois State on April 13. Helping lead the way was junior
Daniel Sancho Arbizu, the final Summit League Peak Performer of the Week, who lost just five combined games across his two singles matches on the weekend.
Denver's History Against the Field:
North Dakota: Denver now holds a 6-0 record against North Dakota following its 7-0 sweep on March 31 in this year's regular-season meeting. They have one previous Summit League tournament meeting, a 4-0 sweep for DU in Denver in 2021, also in a semifinal match.
Drake: With its 5-2 sweep at Drake this season, Denver improved to 14-10 all-time against the Bulldogs. In total, they have met three times previously in the Summit League tournament, each in the championship match in three of the last four years with Drake winning two of them. Combined, the teams account for every tournament champion since Denver joined the Summit League in 2013-14.
Illinois State: Denver moved to 8-2 against Illinois State with its 7-0 win in Denver on April 13 in the teams' regular-season finale. DU has now won eight in a row against the Redbirds. They have only met once previously in the Summit League tournament during the 2022 semifinals in Omaha, which Denver won, 4-1.
Tournament Schedule:
Denver and North Dakota play in the first of two semifinal matches on Friday with No. 2 seed Drake taking on No. 3 seed Illinois State at 6 p.m. CT/5 p.m. MT. The winners of the two semifinal will meet in the Summit League final on Saturday, April 20, at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT where the winner will secure an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
