DENVER – The University of Denver hockey program has 21 current and former players that will be attending 2024 NHL prospect development camps during the month of July. Most camps begin this week following last weekend's NHL draft in Las Vegas, but several are scheduled to occur in the ensuing weeks as well.
The Pioneers have 15 current players and six alums attending 14 different NHL camps. DU had 18 players affiliated with the program attend camps last year.
Five players are staying local and attending the Colorado Avalanche's development camp from July 2-6: recently-signed alum
Sean Behrens, 2024 draft picks and incoming DU freshmen
Jake Fisher and
Tory Pitner and invitees
Boston Buckberger and
Matt Davis. The Minnesota Wild (
Zeev Buium,
Rieger Lorenz), San Jose Sharks (
Eric Pohlkamp, alum
Magnus Chrona) and Winnipeg Jets (
Garrett Brown,
Kieran Cebrian) also have multiple Pioneers attending their respective camps.
Incoming freshmen
Hagen Burrows (Tampa Bay Lightning) and
James Reeder (Los Angeles Kings) were invited to their NHL clubs' summer camps after being drafted last weekend but both players won't be able to attend due to summer school at DU. Committed player Brendan McMorrow is also set to attend the Buffalo Sabres camp this summer.
Development camps are a time where teams can get prospects and invitees familiarized with the professional level of the sport, so the players are prepared for the transition to the pro game in the future. Camps tend to range from three to five days and usually focus on different aspects of being a professional, including on-ice skill work, nutrition and meal preparation, off-ice training and finances.
