WHO: Denver (1-2-0, 0-0-0 Summit) at Lamar (0-1-1, 0-0-0 Southland)
WHAT: DU's third match against 2023 NCAA tourney qualifier
WHERE: LU Soccer Complex (Beaumont, Texas)
WHEN: Sunday, August 25, at 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT
LAST TIME OUT:
Denver came back from an early goal deficit to upset No. 24-ranked Texas A&M on the road, 3-2, on Wednesday. After the Aggies opened scoring in the fifth minute, DU took the lead in the 40
th minute with goals from sophomore
Michaela McGowan and senior
Ella Frost. The teams were tied at halftime, but DU freshman
Megan Murray netted the game winner in the 53
rd minute with her first collegiate goal.
QUICK HITS:
- Wednesday's win at Texas A&M was Denver's:
- First win over a nationally-ranked team since August 29, 2019 (3-0 over No. 24/11 Texas at home);
- First road win at a top-25 opponent since September 26, 2013 (1-0 at No. 17 BYU); and
- First-ever road win at an SEC team
- M. McGowan became the first DU player since classmate Liv Moritz on August 24, 2023, to score a goal and have two assists in the same match – and coincidentally, both Pioneers played a role in all three Denver goals in their respective matches.
- M. Murray became the 20th Denver true freshman to have her first collegiate goal also be a game winner.
- In each of the last five seasons, a DU freshman has now achieved such a feat with M. Murray joining Denver offensive stars Sami Feller and Kaitlyn Glover, among others.
- Multiple Pioneers continue to extend notable playing streaks to start the 2024 season:
- Senior Riley Baker has now started in 32 of DU's last 34 matches.
- Senior Ella Frost has played in every match of her career.
- Graduate student Vanessa Murray has started in 30-consecutive matches.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS:
This will be the first meeting between Denver and Lamar – making it two matches in a row that DU has faced a first-time opponent. Entering the season, Denver had not faced any of its first four opponents of the season more than once previously.
The Cardinals have played just twice this season, most recently finishing in a scoreless draw against Abilene Christian on Thursday night at home. Lamar has yet to find the back of the net but is led by Taylor Conway with three shot attempts, including two on target. Ella Carmody, too, has two shots on goal this year.
Denver and Lamar share a common opponent through the start of the season in Texas A&M. DU scored a 3-2 win at A&M on Wednesday while Lamar fell, 5-0, at home to the Aggies in the season opener.
WHAT'S NEXT:
Denver returns home for two matches before heading on a five-match road trip. DU will first host CSUN on Thursday, August 29, at 7 p.m. MT before welcoming Colorado College on Sunday, September 1, at 1 p.m. MT.
