Denver Women’s Soccer Match at Northern Colorado Suspended

Play suspended in 20th minute due to lightning, unable to resume due to field conditions
GREELEY, Colorado – The University of Denver women's soccer team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 WCC) played 19 minutes of its season opener at Northern Colorado on Thursday evening before play was suspended for the night due to field conditions and an extended lightning delay.
The match was scoreless at the time of suspension (19:52).
After a delay of about 50 minutes, match officials and members of both coaching staffs agreed not to resume play for the remainder of the night due to additional lightning strikes in the area combined with flooding on the pitch at Jackson Stadium.
As of Thursday, August 13, at 9 p.m. MT, information about a potential reschedule for the match had not yet been determined.

KEY MOMENTS PRIOR TO SUSPENSION
12' | Freshman Caitlin Staats registered the first shot attempt for either team, putting it on target from 20 yards out. UNC's Thordis Melsted made the save but did not control it on the first touch.
20' | Senior Kera Nguyen took Denver's first corner of the night, finding freshman Keirra Venson in the center of the six-yard box. The freshman's header bounced toward the far post but was saved. Staats eventually found the bouncing ball at her feet and added another shot for DU but also had it saved.
Kickoff had also pushed back by 25 minutes after what would be the first of two weather delays. This marked the second Denver season opener in a row that had kickoff delayed due to weather.

Denver will take to the field again to wrap up its opening weekend with another in-state road match when the Pioneers travel to Colorado State on Sunday, August 16, at 3 p.m. MT.
