DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer program kept its third cleansheet of the season in a scoreless draw with Portland on Saturday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Notes:
The draw was Denver's third result against Portland in now 10 meetings.
Saturday afternoon was the first draw between the two teams in 10 meetings.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lucy Garnsey made two saves in her third cleansheet in nine appearances this season.
Denver's defense allowed two shots on goal or less for the third time this season, and Saturday marked the first time the Pioneer defense did so since September 6 in a 2-0 win over Montana.
How it Happened:
14' Denver earned its first corner of the afternoon, and played a dangerous ball in the box, but Portland cleared its lines.
16' Portland's Journey Middleborn forced Lucy Garnsey into her first save of the afternoon.
26' Lilly Lund got a shot on target five minutes after coming on, but it was blocked in-front to take the pace off the attempt.
28' Coming off the bench as well, Camila Palacios took the ball out of the air on a full volley from 16-yards out and hit a screamer just wide of the far post and in-behind for a goal kick.
45' Portland earned a trio of corner kicks in the final couple of minutes of the opening half, but Denver defended them well, sending the teams back into the locker room at 0-0.
64' Denver's best chance at the breakthrough fell to the feet of Caitlin Staats who looked to pick out the far corner, but Portland goalkeeper Sophia Hills pushed it outside the post and in behind for a corner.
68' Natalia Niebles-Webb nearly found the opener for the visitors when she uncorked a shot from outside the box, but rattled the woodwork of Garnsey's left post. Denver's defense cleared it out for a Portland throw.
73' Garnsey made a beautiful save to her right on a shot from Xayla Black inside the box to keep things scoreless heading into the final quarter hour.
83' Kacey Harvey and Rowan LaPiano combined for an interchange at the top of the box, setting up a shot outside the box from Harvey, but Harvey's attempt was saved standing by Hills.
87' Portland momentarily thought it had found a late game winner, but the Pilots had two players in an offside position, but the linesman correctly flagged the attacking players.
UP NEXT:
Denver will jump back on the road for two-straight, starting with a trip to San Francisco on Saturday, October 24 at 2 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
