DENVER – The international season continued on Saturday for three University of Denver triathletes, as they competed at the Americas Cup Triathlon in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Due to water quality in the North Saskatchewan River, the triathlon was forced to move to a duathlon—beginning with a 2.5-kilometer run instead of the usual 750-meter swim before the typical 20K bike and 5K run in and around Kinsmen Park in downtown Edmonton.
DU sophomore
Maira Carreau of Canada led the trio of Pioneers in the race by finishing sixth overall with a time of 57:04.9 (8:37/28:20.9/18:20.2). She was eighth after the opening run and had the third-fastest bike split to climb the leaderboard in the end.
Fellow Canadian
Alex Campbell came in third among all junior athletes and 14th overall as the Denver sophomore timed in at 59:26.6 (9:09.1/28:48.3/19:29.4).
Pioneer freshman
Ava Pfaff was right behind Campbell by placing 18th overall and fourth among juniors after clocking in at 59:53.3 (9:09.6/28:53.0/19:54.7).
Lydia Russell of the United States won the event in 56:04.0, while Canada's Beatrice Filion was the top junior (seventh overall) in 57:10.6.
The Pioneers' full team will be back on the race course on Saturday, Aug. 31 as they kick off the 2024 regular season with a super sprint at the Southern Hills Triathlon in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
