Late Rallies Not Enough As Pioneers Fall to Utah Tech 3-2

OGDEN, UT --Molly Mirabelli tallied 13 kills with a .667 hitting percentage, but the Denver volleyball team fell in five sets (14-25, 25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 10-15) to the Utah Tech Trailblazers Friday at Swenson Gym in Ogden, Utah.

The Pioneers offense was paced by Ava Reynolds, who finished with 14 kills on the day, and by Mirabelli, who had 13 while hitting .667. got 16 digs from Alayna Finucan to lead them defensively.

SET 1 | The Pioneers fell behind early, dropping a tough first set 25-14. Denver trailed by as many as 12 points as Utah Tech grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was notted up two times before the Trailblazers took control.

SET 2 | Denver rallied to take the second set 25-17, evening the match at one set apiece. The Pioneers grabbed the set powered by a solid performance on the attacking side. Denver put together a .462 attack percentage with 15 kills in the set win. The Pioneers ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The Denver offense also got a boost from three aces in the set.

SET 3 | Denver built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one. The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure a 25-16 victory. Denver ended on a high note, claiming its biggest lead, nine points, to finish off the set.

SET 4 | Denver couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Trailblazers forced a fifth set with a 25-21 fourth-set win. 

SET 5 | Denver opened a lead of two sets to one before losing the final two sets, including a 15-10 loss in the fifth set. The Pioneers had a lead early in the set at 6-5 before Utah Tech took over.
