Pioneers Sweep Air Force in Defensive Showcase

DENVER, CO --The Denver volleyball team racked up 11 blocks en route to a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-9, 26-24) over the Air Force Falcons Thursday at Hamilton Gymnasium.

The  victory improved Denver's overall record to 5-2 on the season.

The Pioneers offense was paced by Cassie Davis, who finished with 12 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .360, and Molly Mirabelli, who had 12 while hitting .667. Denver got 14 digs from Alayna Finucan along with eight blocks from Mirabelli to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Pioneers survived a back-and-forth first set to win 25-23 in a stanza that featured five lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the match. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Air Force attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Denver put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-9 victory in set number two. The Pioneers grabbed control of the set lead early on at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way. Denver opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 16 points, to close out the set. The Denver offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza. Denver's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Air Force attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Denver took the third set to finish off the match. The Pioneers won the set 26-24 thanks to a solid showing on the attacking end. Denver registered a .438 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands one time, the Pioneers took control for good at 25-24 and rode that advantage to victory.
