WHO: Denver (6-3-0, 0-0-0 Summit) at Gonzaga (3-4-1, 0-0-0 WCC)
WHAT: DU's final 2024 non-conference match
WHERE: Luger Field (Spokane, Washington)
WHEN: Thursday, September 19, at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT
LAST TIME OUT:
Denver captured its fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 win at Colorado State on Thursday, September 12. After entering halftime at 0-0 for the fifth time this season, graduate student
Vanessa Murray scored the match's only goal just over three minutes into the second half. DU allowed a season-low one shot on goal to CSU to help sophomore
Molly Wissman earn her second clean sheet of the year and the eighth of her career.
QUICK HITS:
- Denver's 1-0 win at Colorado State marked the 250th clean sheet in DU's Division I history and its 79th at a road match.
- Sophomore Michaela McGowan is tied for No. 3 nationally in total assists with six so far in 2024.
- Her six assists are already more than a Pioneer had in all of 2023. The last time a DU player had more than six in a season was 2021 (Natalie Beckman with 18 and Sami Feller with 11).
- DU's six non-conference wins are tied for the fifth most in Denver's DI history (excluding 1998 and 1999 when the team was independent).
- A win on Thursday will move DU into a tie for the program's third-most non-conference wins, equaling its seven victories in 2003 and 2008. The program record is nine from the 2013 season.
- For the second week in a row, Denver will play just a single match.
- All Summit League teams play just once this week or are on a bye leading into the start of league play next week.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
Gonzaga is coming off a 3-0 loss at home to [RV] Utah Valley on September 15. The Bulldogs' last win came in a 3-0 shutout at UIC on September 8 with an 18
th-minute game winner from Emily Todd. Erin Ewers and Alexis Parker lead GU with two goals apiece this season, and Lauren Towne has started in goal in every match.
Denver leads the head-to-head against Gonzaga, 2-1-0. Each team owns a road win over the other, but DU owns the tiebreaker with a neutral-site 3-0 win on September 21, 2008, in Boulder, Colorado. This will be the teams' first meeting since September 10, 2017, in Denver and their first in Spokane since September 12, 2010.
WHAT'S NEXT:
DU begins Summit League play to finish a five-match road trip at Kansas City on Thursday, September 26, before finally returning home for the first time in four weeks when the Pioneers host North Dakota on Sunday, September 29.
